Independent American label out of New York: Ze Records was owned by Michael Zilka (one of the family behind the Mothercare company) and Michel Esteban. It came on the scene in 1979 and trod its own rather exotic path during the early '80s, with a string of 'Camp Pop', 'Mutant Disco' and 'Punk Funk' releases. Ze's style was typified by Kid Creole & the Coconuts, who took the label into the Singles Chart repeatedly in 1981-83. Ze first appeared in Britain as a logo on a couple of singles that were licensed to Island Records, Cristina's 'Disco Clone' (WIP-6466; 11/78) and 'Hard Day At The Office' by The Reasons (WIP-6467; 11/78). It made its debut as an actual label in May of the following year and concentrated upon 12" singles; it did however put out three 7" records, and thus qualified for this site. Distribution was by Spartan. Pressing was done by Island, but that company had sold its pressing plant by that time; one of the singles was manufactured by Lyntone. November 1979 saw the company linking up with Island again and the release of another single with an Island label and a Ze logo: Suicide's 'Dream Baby Dream' (WIP-6543; 11/79). Subsequent issues had a dedicated Ze label design and shared Island's WIP-6000 numerical series. Ze seems to have expired in 1984. Thanks to Robert Lyons For The Info.
