UNITED ARTIST
RECORDS

Independent American label: United Artists Records was a division of the United Artists film company.  United Artists Records was founded in 1958 as an outlet for UA's film soundtracks.  In the '60s the scope of the label broadened to include Folk, Jazz, Pop and Rock, and the hits started to come. Three of the definitive records of that decade appeared on United Artists in Britain: Gene Pitney's, 'Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa' (UP-1035; 1963); Shirley Bassey's, 'Big Spender' (UP-1192; 1967), and the company's first No.1, 'Where Do You Go To My Lovely', by Peter Sarstedt (UP-2262, 1969). In 1969 UA acquired the Liberty and Blue Note labels, strengthening its roster considerably. Things got even better in the '70s: there were more No.1s, by Don McLean and Kenny Rogers, and a number of Top 5s by artists as varied as Hawkind, Billie Jo Spears and Laurel & Hardy. Punk credibility was provided by The Stranglers and The Buzzcocks; the likes of Maxine Nightingale and Brass Construction added Disco successes; even Krautrock was catered for, with Can, Amon Duul 2 and Neu. When UA started issuing reggae records, on the Ballistic label, in the late 70s, it appeared that every kind of music was represented on its catalogue. Sadly, however, the good times were not to last. In 1979 United Artists Records was bought by EMI; the deal put a time limit on EMI's right to use the United Artists name, however, and when that time limit expired, in September 1980, the UA label was replaced by Liberty - both of the catalogue number series remained unchanged.  The final year saw a few more hits, including another No.1 for Kenny Rogers - United Artists' most successful artist in the USA - but that was the lot.
The company used several different label designs during the course of its lifetime.  Early issues shared label credits and POP-000 catalogue numbers with HMV. The label colours seem to have been the same as those of HMV singles; they were blue for the most part with an occasional black one presumably as the result of a late re-pressing.   In August 1962 UA got its own black-and-silver label and a dedicated UP-1000 numerical series; the UP-1000s reached UP-1208 in February 1968, at which point the numbers jumped to UP-2209 and a silver-on-light-blue label was adopted. The series continued until April 1969, when a UP-35000 series came in. Numbers appear to have jumped from 35899 to 36000, except for a couple of entries at 35951 and 35952. In the summer of 1970 this UP-36000 series was replaced by two separate ones, UP-600 and BP-300; the UPs seem to have been material sourced from America, the BPs from Britain, though for some reason Slim Whitman singles tended to be BPs. To get back to the labels: the light-blue-and-silver design was superseded by an orange-and-pink one in August 1969, with UP-35027.  The plain orange variant, would appear to be a one-off, presumably caused by a shortage of the standard labels. In April 1971 the familiar brown-on-fawn label appeared; UP-35204 seems to have been the first single to bear that kind of label. It remained essentially unchanged for the rest of the decade, except that the part of the perimeter legend which read 'A product of Liberty-United Artists Records' lost the reference to 'Liberty' after November 1976.  For Rhythm 'n' Blues singles, such as those by Dr. Feelgood and the Flaming Groovies, the colours were changed to silver-on-black. The black-on-yellow variant was unusual, while the 'American Townscape' one seems to have been limited to a couple of licensed singles by Country Gazette (UP 35659) and The Dillards (UP-35660). Very occasionally, presumably because of contract pressings being done for EMI by other firms, UA singles came with injection-moulded labels. A series of EPs of past hits appeared from 1973-1976, with numbers in the REM-400s, for 'Remember'.  Some of these EPs had a special label design, featuring a stylised American car. This label, which later had the words 'The 'Silver Spotlight Series' included on it, was used for some reissues into the 1980s, with standard UP-36000 catalogue numbers - the Fats Domino single shown dates from 1979.  There was a special sleeve for these later reissues. Some artists, such as the Stranglers, the Buzzcocks and 999, were given their own individual label designs. Manufacture was by EMI throughout the '70s, though the RCA-like appearance of the promos from 1971 and 1973 needs explaining.  EMI was also responsible for the distribution of United Artists records.  By 1974 the promos had adopted the generic EMI form, with the small black 'A' and the 'DEMO RECORD NOT FOR SALE' wording. Two years later United Artists had its own distinctive promo style, with a faint red 'A'; again the wording - 'Demonstration Record Not For Sale' - is the usual RCA one. Promos from the '60s had mainly followed the standard EMI family designs: white with a big red 'A' until October 1966, then green with a big white 'A' until February 1968 and the end of the black labelled issues. Labels associated with United Artists in the '70s included Avalanche, Cow Pie, Grateful Dead, Midnight Hour, Pepper, and Rockfield. Thanks to Robert Lyons For The Info.
