Independent American label: 20th Century Records was the record division of the film giant of 20th Century Fox. It began issuing records in the USA in 1958, but managed only a few hits from its many releases. From 1970 to 1972 the label was inactive; it was brought back to life in 1972, dropping the 'Fox' part of its name and gaining a new logo. Russ Regan, president of Uni Records, was put in charge of the revived label; he brought with him producer Barry White, who was to become one of Soul music's most recognisable and successful singers. Regan left in 1976, and the company's name reverted to 20th Century Fox. It rode the Disco boom of the late '70s, but when Disco died its fortunes nosedived. It was sold to Polygram, who closed it down and transferred the artists on its books to the Casablanca label. In Britain 20th Century signed a licensing agreement with Pye in 1973, which led to the company's records being issued on the Pye International label. The actual 20th Century label first saw the light of day late in 1974, as an extension of that agreement. 20th Century was to rely upon Pye for manufacture and distribution for all but the last few months of the '70s. Four different labels were used during the Pye years; they are shown, in chronological order - the injection-moulded type was a contract pressing, made by Phonodisc, presumably at a time when Pye's own presses were fully occupied. The first label, which was pale blue, went paler and gained a more colourful logo in October 1975. This design lasted until April 1978, when it was replaced by a more ambitious yellow one, in which the company's name now included 'Fox'. Towards the end of the Pye era the artist credits on the yellow label moved from 6 o'clock to 9 o'clock. RCA took over manufacture and distribution for the last years of the label's existence; the label stayed basically the same, except that the Pye logo disappeared and the manufacturing and distribution credits changed accordingly. The singles appeared in two different, roughly concurrent, numerical series : a BTC-2000 one, from 1974 on, and a BTC-1000 one, from May 1975. The 2000 numbers were the same as those of the the American issues, but the American prefix was 'TC' rather than 'BTC'; in addition, the dates of issue in the different countries sometimes varied. The BTC-1000s appear to have been specific to Britain, though the material on them was often not British in origin.
