RECORDS
Independent label: Pageant Records was a short-lived
label, the existence of which was presumably inspired by the Silver Jubilee of
Queen Elizabeth II - both its releases were Jubilee orientated. First up
was a double album featuring a mix of news, sporting events and songs from
1952-77, introduced by Roy Castle, 'A Silver Jubilee Of Memories'
(SJM-001/002). Secondly, and lastly, there was the EP shown, a selection
of competition-winning fanfares and marches played by members of the C.W.S.
(Manchester) Band (SJM-003). Both came out in 1977. The EP was
pressed by Pye, the company which seems to have licensed most of the musical
material for the LP. Distributed By Pye Records. Roy Castle, OBE (Born 31
August 1932 in Scholes, near Holmfirth, West Riding of Yorkshire and died 2
September 1994 was an English dancer, singer, comedian, actor, television
presenter and musician. In addition to being a talented jazz trumpet player, he
could play many other instruments. Castle was found to have lung cancer in
January 1992. He was predicted to live only another 6 months. He underwent
chemotherapy and radiotherapy and went into remission later that year. A
non-smoker, he blamed his illness on passive smoking during his years of playing
the trumpet in smoky jazz clubs. On 26 November 1993, Castle announced that his
illness had returned, and once again underwent treatment in the hope of
overcoming it. Several months later, he carried out the high profile Tour of
Hope to raise funds for the erection of the building that would become the Roy
Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, which was – and still is – the only British
charity dedicated entirely to defeating lung cancer. By this stage, however, his
condition was deteriorating and recovery was looking highly unlikely. He died in
Buckinghamshire on 2 September 1994, two days after his 62nd birthday. The CWS
(Manchester) Band was Formed 1900, Manchester, Greater Manchester, Disbanded in
March 1993 Also Known As CWS Tobacco Manchester Band, City of Manchester Band,
