NEW STAR
RECORDS
Independent Reggae label: New Star Records put out at least five
singles during 1977-78, in a NEW-0 catalogue series, with Mojo handling the
distribution. Pye Records picked up NEWs 1, 4 and 5 in December 1979 and
gave them wider distribution. The label was owned by David Sinclair
('Tapper Zukie'). Tapper Zukie (or Tappa Zukie) (born David Sinclair,
1955, Kingston, Jamaica) is a reggae deejay and producer. Tapper was the
nickname given to him by his grandmother in his youth, while Zukie was a name
that came from his friends' association as a young boy - their gang was called
'The Zukies'. Knowledge were a Jamaican roots reggae group, best known for their
work in the late 1970s and early 1980s, which saw them sign to A&M Records.
The group formed in the Rema area of Kingston, in 1974, the line-up including
Anthony Doyley (lead vocals and main songwriter), Delroy Fowlin (vocals) aka
Bronco Knowledge, Earl MacFarlane (vocals), Michael Smith (guitar), and Michael
Samuels (vocals). Doyley had previously been a member of The Classics, who had
recorded for Lee "Scratch" Perry in the late 1960s. Paul Freeman joined the
group later in their career. They recorded for deejay and producer Tapper Zukie,
first on the "Make Faith" single, with several releases on his "Stars" label.
These led to a major label deal with A&M, who issued the group's debut
album, Hail Dread (produced by Zukie), in 1978. Linval Thompson Real Name:
Phillip Alphonso a Jamaican reggae and dub musician and record producer. Born 12
October 1954, Kingston, Jamaica. Thompson was raised in Kingston, Jamaica, but
spent time with his mother in Queens, New York, and his recording career began

Brooklyn, New York. Returning to Jamaica in the mid 1970s he recorded with Phil

Jamaica, he worked with Lee "Scratch" Perry at his Black Ark studio, recording
"Kung Fu Man", and recorded with Bunny Lee, which resulted in his debut album,
Don't Cut Off Your Dreadlocks, in 1976. Thompson began to produce his own
material, the first fruits being the Trojan album, I Love Marijuana (1978), and
its dub counterpart Negrea Love Dub. Although he continued to work as a singer,
he became increasingly prominent as a producer, working with key artists of the
late roots and early dancehall era such as Dennis Brown, Cornell Campbell, The
Wailing Souls, Barrington Levy and Trinity. Thanks to Robert Lyons For The
