NEIGHBOURHOOD
RECORDS
Independent American label: Neighborhood Records belonged to
singer Melanie Safka and producer Peter Schekeryk, her husband. It lasted
from 1971 to 1975 in the States; over here it came on the scene in October
1972. As well as releasing Melanie's own records Neigborhood issued
product by other people, most notably by Mike Heron, late of the Incredible
String Band; but its sole British Singles Chart hit, 'Will You Still Love Me
Tomorrow' (NBH-9; 1974) was Melanie's. In July 1974 the British arm of the
company was acting as an independent at that time, under the name of
'Neighborhood Record Company', and a couple of British acts were indeed signed
to the label. Initially Neighborhood records were manufactured and
distributed by EMI, its singles being numbered in the 'NBH-0's. In
November 1974 CBS took over, and the label design changed completely. The
NBH prefix stayed the same, but the new four-figure numbering series following
it was shared with the other CBS labels. After the first three releases
the label got paler, for some reason. In 1980 it was Distributed
By IDS Records. Melanie was born Melanie Anne Safka-Schekeryk on February
3, 1947. She is an American singer-songwriter. Known professionally as Melanie,
she is best known for her hits "Brand New Key", "Ruby Tuesday", "What Have They
Done to My Song, Ma", and her song about performing at the 1969 Woodstock Music
Festival, "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)". Melanie was born and raised in the
Astoria neighborhood of Queens, New York City. She performed at the Woodstock
Festival in 1969 and the inspiration for her signature song, "Lay Down (Candles
in the Rain)", apparently arose from the Woodstock audience lighting candles
during her set (although most of the "candles" were actually matches or
lighters). Melanie married Peter Schekeryk around 1970 and they had three
children. She left Buddah Records when they insisted that she produce albums on
demand. In 1971 she formed her own label, Neighborhood Records. Thanks to
