Independent label: Koala Records was based in Hull; it appears
to have been a small independent label, though at first it may have been a
custom recording concern. It was run by Richard Mackenzie. 'New
Faces' winner Eve Adam had signed to the label, and released a single on Koala,
Old Fashioned Love' (KOA P-18 S; 1977). The catalogue number suggests that
there may have been other records on Koala before that one: as yet I have only
managed to track down one, a highly collectable LP called 'Some Other Morning'
by Christian Folk band Cair Paravel (KOA P-16; 1976). Others may indicate
that they were private pressings - if they exist, of course. Catalogue
numbers reached KOA R-20S, Patrick Mower's 'My Imagination', in 1977 -
presumably the 'R' and the 'P' at the end of the prefixes had some significance,
and the 'S' at the end of the number indicated a single. The release date
of October 1977 for that record and for the Eve Adam one, but it may be that
that date was merely the one on which the firm (Peerless) which was currently
responsible for marketing them started handling them. The next Koala
records are a pair of singles by '60s hitmaker Carol Deene. 'Angel In Your
Arms' was marketed and distributed by Rediffusion, while 'Nativity Song' was
made through custom recording firm SRT - it had a matrix number of
S/79/CUS-583. These singles shared a new numerical series, KOA-100.
1980 saw another Koala single, 'Your I's Are Too Close Together' by a Rock / Pop
band from Leicester, The Elevators; it also saw another change of catalogue
numbers, to the KOA-400s. Pressing was done through Ellie Jay, and the new
Koala design was practically identical to the 1980 Ellie Jay label. Koala
