Independent American label: Janus Records was a subsidiary of Chess Records; it was headed by Marvin Schlachter and was owned by the GRT Corporation. It ran from 1970 to 1975, at which point it was absorbed into Chess and was sold on with it to All Platinum Records.  In Britain both Chess and Janus were part of the Phonogram group, which explains why early releases have paper labels and later ones are injection-moulded, though the occasional paper-labelled single slipped out now and again.  Janus singles appeared mainly in a 6146-000 numerical series, with an additional 6146-200 one late on; Chess singles were numbered in the 6145-000s.  Until 1973 Janus singles had their own company sleeves, but from that time onwards they shared the common Phonogram Group ones.  Ray Stevens provided the company with its only hits in the UK Singles Chart, getting to No.1 with 'The Streak' (6146-201; 1974), No.2 with 'Misty' (6146-204; 1975), and No.34 with 'Indian Love Call' (6146-205; 1975). .
