ERIC'S
RECORDS
Independent label: Eric's Records was from Liverpool,
active from 1977-81, Eric's was run by Roger Eagle and Pete Fulwell, who
named it after the club that they owned. The club, in 9 Mathew Street
Liverpool L2 6RE, Opposite The Cavern Club where The Beatles and other bands of
the 1960s played, and became notable for hosting early performances by many punk
and post-punk bands, best-known names of the Punk scene - The Clash, The
Jam, The Stranglers, Blondie, etc, etc - during 1976-80, and inspired the
formation of local bands such as Orchestral Maneouvres In The Dark, Wah! Heat,
and Echo & The Bunnymen. The club was started by Roger Eagle and Ken
Testi (manager of cult Liverpool band Deaf School) and joined later by Pete
Fulwell (owner of a small record label "Inevitable" and later to become manager
of Liverpool bands It's Immaterial and The Christians). The club was given the
name 'Eric's' by Ken Testi as an antidote to disco clubs with names such as
'Tiffany's' and 'Samantha's'The record label played host to fewer famous names,
but it did however issue the first records by Holly Johnson and by Big In Japan,
all of whom went on to bigger and better things. Seven-inch and
twelve-inch records used the same numerical series, which started off at
ERICS-0000 and dropped one of the '0's immediately; the prefix became ERS from
004 onwards. The first single had brown injection-moulded labels.
The label's last two issues were albums of old Rock 'n' Roll and Rockabilly
records which could be found on the jukebox at the club. Distribution of
some middle-period items was by Virgin. Thanks to Robert Lyons For The
Info.
