Cube was the successor to the Fly label, which was started
by David Platz in 1970. After eighteen singles on Fly (BUG-1 to BUG-18) the
nineteenth, BUG-19, appeared on Cube; though the label's design, featuring a fly
inside a cube, made the connection obvious. The company handled a mixture
of material, with reissues from the likes of Procol Harum, Joe Cocker and
Tyrannosaurus Rex coming out alongside new recordings from Joan Armatrading,
Harvey Andrews, the JSD Band, etc. Cube was never as successful in the
singles chart as Fly had been, though Jimmy Helms's 'Gonna Make You An Offer You
Can't Refuse' got into the Top 10 in 1973 and both Gordon Giltrap and Quantum
Jump had hits later in the decade on Cube's sister-label Electric. By the
1980s Fly/Cube was primarily associated with TV/Film/Theatre music from the
Bucks Music company. It was revived in the mid-90s, and again in
2002. The label's first manufacturer / distributor was EMI), who had
handled Fly, but Polydor and Phonogram took over those tasks in early 1973.
Polydor's habit of dinking some of its singles at source played merry hell with
the label design, a problem which ended when injection-moulded labels were
introduced and the design was altered. By October that year
Cube was back with EMI, and the paper labels had returned with a slightly
different layout (5). A move to Decca (for manufacture) and Selecta (for
distribution) in early 1975 saw more minor changes in the label
layout, as well as the appearance of wider dinking perforations than
had previously been seen. Decca and Selecta handled Cube until late
1977 when Pye took over both of their functions. Thanks
