CHISWICK / ACE / BIG BEAT

 Independent label: Chiswick record company was started by Ted Carroll and Trevor Churchill as a logical progression from selling records from a stall in Soho market. Chiswick was one of the first labels to issue Punk Rock records, and it enjoyed a lot of success in that field. The Damned took the label into the charts on several occasions from 1979-80, as did Doo-Wop revival band Rocky Sharpe & The Replays (from 1978-82). Carroll and Churchill put out reissues of old Rock 'n' Roll records as well as their own recordings. They licensed Chiswick to EMI in 1978, and replaced it with two other labels: 'Big Beat' for contemporary material and 'Ace' for reissues. Chiswick singles initially appeared early in 1976, in a S-0 numerical series; EPs were given an SW prefix. The records were marketed by President and distributed by Lugton and H. R. Taylor, who generally handled President family labels. Chiswick themselves were responsible for getting the pressings done; a few singles from this period was a Lyntone products. A switch to Anchor Records came in mid 1977, along with a company sleeve and change of prefix, to NS; distribution was by CBS during this period. Finally when EMI took over manufacture and distribution, from September 1978, a new label design was adopted, an EMI credit appeared on the sleeve and the numbering changed to CHIS-100; the design appears to have made at least one previous appearance, on NS-36. EMI-era singles which have a black 'A' on the label seem to have been promos. The old NS and SW series were used for Ace and Big Beat records from this point, which were distributed by Swift or Pinnacle. Thanks to Robert Lyons For The Info.
