 Independent label: Chess Records was one of the premier blues labels of the 1950s and 60s, also releasing R&B, soul, jazz, gospel and rock. Chess released records by every major blues artist in Chicago, including John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Bo Diddley, Jimmy Reed, Chuck Berry and many others. Brothers Leonard and Phil Chess emigrated from Poland to the United States in 1928. In the 1940s they owned the upscale Macomba nightclub in Chicago's Southside neighborhood and several other bars. Blues artists performed regularly at The Macomba, and the Chess brothers realized they were not being recorded. They bought in to the small R&B label Aristocrat Records in 1947, then bought out the remaining partners in 1949 and changed the name to Chess in 1950. Chess flourished; later, in the Rock 'n' Roll era, it brought Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley to the world. The early '60s saw a move into Soul music, but the latter part of that decade was a time of gradual decline: the label's talent leaked away and was not replaced.  The Chess brothers sold the label to General Recorded Tape in 1969; in August 1975 what remained of it was sold to All Platinum Records, of New Jersey, and it was reduced to a reissue label.  The 1960s incarnation of Chess in Britain was handled by Pye; it issued singles in a CRS-8000 series and lasted from c.1965-c.69.  The 1970s version was distributed first by Philips and then by that company's purpose-made distribution arm, Phonodisc.   Early '70s issues had a paper label; later ones were injection Thanks to Robert Lyons for the info.
