Independent label: Checkmate Records was a record shop and Country music label, run by Graham and Sue Rowe out of premises in Northbrook St, Newbury, Berkshire.  Checkmate began issuing records in late 1976.  It concentrated on LPs, the catalogue numbers of which reached at least CMLF-1032 by April 1978,  but it issued a solitary single, Jimmy Payne's 'Feeling The Weight Of My Chains' b/w 'Can I Pick You Up', which was numbered CMSS-806.  Distributed By Checkmate Records.
