ASYLUM
RECORDS

American. Asylum was formed by David Geffen in 1972; it was merged with Elektra in August, though the labels continued to keep their separate identities. Musically it leaned towards American Folk-Rock / Rock / Singer-songwriter material.  The first, AYM-500, series was manufactured and distributed by EMI the later K-13000, series was handled by WEA - nearly all the WEA labels had 'K' prefixes at that time. The move happened at the start of 1976, when WEA set up its own distribution network. Towards the end of 1979 Asylum started sharing Elektra's K-12000 series. The company was no stranger to the British charts: its first single, Jo Jo Gunne's, 'Run Run Run' (AYM-501; 1972), achieved the company's highest Singles Chart placing, reaching No.6, but The Eagles were its most consistent hit-makers, registering in the Top 40 seven times between 1975 and 1979. By 1992 Asylum had become more or less a Country music subsidiary of Elektra; it hibernated during the latter part of that decade, but was revived in 2004. It is still part of the Warner Music group. In the EMI years and the first part of the WEA era Asylum singles had their own company sleeves, but from 1978 WEA began using a common sleeve for all its labels, including Asylum. That sleeve changed design in 1979.  A 'Treasured Tracks' series of Asylum and Elektra singles appeared in the Autumn of 1976, and was given a special sleeve.
